Beth got me a olympia this past year. orange and awesome.
This is from an article about Pot Paternalism. But what I find fascinating is that what you are watching is the death of one generation and the maturation into old age of another. The earliest baby boomers would be about 20 in 1969 - and 60 by 2009. What the baby boomers did then is take their teen and twenties with them into old age. While the generation that made pot illegal simply died out.
Generational evolution of politics. http://andrewsullivan.thedailybeast.com/2013/01/can-.html With 34.2 guns per 100 people, Iraq is ranked eighth on the survey. More to the point, the countryalready had a well-established gun culture and a high rate of gun ownership before the overthrow of Saddam Hussein. We can't know for sure if a well-armed population could have stopped Hitler's genocide, but it certainly didn't stop Saddam's. read the original article here. http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2013/01/09/guns_dont_kill_dictatorships_people_do
It was my birthday today and it was good. Got a few new shirts (madras) to take to europe. Then beth and i went to the mall, bought stuff at jcrew and the container store. Going to see my folks soon, so more presents on the way.
Worked today on adding material to the wikipedia site for Camden County College. This has been an ongoing side project for me, starting last year. When i started there was only 1 paragraph and a small list of "notable alumni" which some politico put up.
Now its a massive page encompassing more then ten photos, a video i took of the police academy flag raising ceremony, and text on all the different campuses. Maybe i will include a reference to my podcasts. Maybe. Its going well. A little piece of home, right here in South Jersey. The National Scholastic crew championships are here at the Cooper River in Cherry Hill. And here is a photo of my old HS team boats and tent. Apparently, in crew circles Chaminade is AWESOME. Who Knew? but for the last two days the town is filled with the yells and cheers of enthusiastic (and incredibly in-shape) teens.
All I have to say is ROOOOOOOOWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!! (check out the link around 43 minutes) The Penn Museum is hosting an exhibit on artifacts of the old Silk Road. In my World Civ classes I spend a lot of time discussing the economics, the politics and the culture of the Silk Road.
So I'm going to give my students extra credit if they go and experience the exhibit. My honors students really liked the project of going to the museums last year. They may not have liked the presentation but several students went to the Penn Museum and were blown away - which was the point. You can see a NY Times piece on the exhibit here: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/21/arts/design/21silk.html?_r=1&hp Burning the wedding DVDs for Rich, this way he can have a few DVDs for his wife's family.
This weekend I've been working on updating the Camden County College wikipedia page. Tomorrow I will be working on a paper to present at the Advancement of Scandinavian Studies Conference. It will be on Swedish counterinsurgency in Poland during the 1650s. Terrible case of writer's bloc today. Trying to write the self evaluation. A niece on the way. In general just trying to get work done. One more week of classes and then a long vacation.
The Self Evaluation has gone terribly. I have worked on it for weeks. I don't know why I am so terrible at this kind of writing but I am. How do I sum up a year of work and not seem pompous. I'm trying to be matter of fact, which of course, turns out boring. Maybe a good night of sleep will help. I'm in the process of writing the year-in-review packet for my Dean. The purpose of the packet is the highlight - illustrate - why I should be kept on for another year. Its hard to remember everything, even with documents, and I should write about events as they happen.
For instance, this year I gave a seminar on how to build a webpage (you can find my professional page at www.professorgennari.com) which was so popular I was brought back for a second engagement. But writing about it now is far less dramatic and more matter-of-fact. Picked up a Cross Affinity Rollberball this weekend. I needed a new pen to use with some everyday writing and college grading. Its very smooth, writes like silk feels against your skin on a cool night.
